Thornhill

An established southeast community split between Vaughan and Markham, with mature streets, a historic core and a mix of older detached homes and newer condos along Yonge Street.

Thornhill is one of the older parts of the area and it straddles a municipal boundary — part of it is in Vaughan, part in Markham. The Vaughan side is the western portion, generally west of Yonge Street. Streets are mature, the tree canopy is established, and there's a broader mix of housing types than in Vaughan's newer communities.

Housing in Thornhill

  • Mature detached homes from several decades, often on established lots.
  • Townhomes and low-rise condos through the central areas.
  • Higher-density condo development along the Yonge Street corridor.

Everyday life and amenities

  • Historic Thornhill village area with older streetscape and community facilities.
  • Well-established retail along Yonge Street, Centre Street and Bathurst Street.
  • Extensive parkland and community centres.

Getting around and commuting

Thornhill is Vaughan's closest community to Toronto's northern edge, with bus service along Yonge Street and access to Highway 407 and Highway 7. It's a common choice for people who want to be near the city without buying in Toronto.

Who Thornhill tends to suit

  • Buyers who want an established neighbourhood with mature trees.
  • People who want transit options and walkable retail closer to Toronto.
  • Downsizers looking at condo options.

Questions about Thornhill

Is Thornhill in Vaughan or Markham?
Both. Thornhill is a community that spans the municipal boundary — the western portion is in the City of Vaughan and the eastern portion is in Markham. When comparing listings, check which municipality a property is actually in, since services and taxes are set municipally.
